The Best Minimalist Diaper Bag Checklist With A Newborn

If you are tired of filling your newborn baby bag with too much stuff, then this minimalist diaper bag checklist is for you!

I don’t know about you, but I find that it is EXTREMELY easy to overpack my diaper bag.

Especially being a first-time mom with a newborn, I’d find myself thinking “maybe I’ll need this” and “maybe I’ll need that”. And then at the end of the night, I’d return home, realizing that I had used less than half of the things I had packed. And I’d tell myself, “Well dang, next time, Miss Mica, don’t take any of that”.

But then guess what? I’d take all of it all over again!

So, I decided enough was enough. I’d remind myself that there’s no need to carry around the whole nursery. Doing so creates a very disorganized bag, which makes it difficult to find ANYTHING. Not to mention that it gets tiring carrying around a big ol’ block of what feels like 100 unnecessary pounds.

So I shed some weight.

This list is what I think is most important to have packed for a newborn for quick trips to the store, park, family visits, etc.

This post is all about a minimalist diaper bag checklist.

Diaper bag

I have yet to find the “perfect” diaper bag. Currently, I use this backpack. I can’t say I’m in love, although it seems like everyone else is. Maybe I’m weird haha! I do like that it’s hands free with stroller clips, but it’s like there are too many pockets- a pro for most, yet a con for me.

This is how I pack my newborn diaper bag to keep things simple and organized.

Diapers

I don’t like to be very stingy on diapers, so I pack around five disposable diapers. This number changes depending on how long we will be gone.

All else fails, it’s easy to run to the store or keep a diaper caddy in the car.

Wipes

I would recommend investing in a small reusable wipe dispenser or making your own at home. A large package takes up space and adds unnecessary weight.

Changing pad

Many moms like a portable changing station insert. The pad I use is included with the backpack I purchased. You could lay down the blanket you packed if you want to save extra space, although I prefer one that’s easy to wipe down if needed.

Diaper rash cream

I really like Aquaphor Baby ointment. The jar is large, but you can transfer some to a small container. There is also this in a smaller tube. Other popular options include Desitin or a diaper rash spray.

An extra outfit for baby

Make sure it is weather appropriate! (This includes a hat, socks, jacket, etc.)

Dog poo bags

In case my baby needs a change, from spit up or a blowout, dog poo bags are great to keep soiled clothes or used diapers in. They take up hardly any space and can even be scented! A wet bag or a plastic/ziplock bag work too.

Nursing cover

I choose to breastfeed and I like to be covered. I prefer a nursing cover that won’t fall off my shoulders. Some moms use a blanket, not only to keep their baby warm, but also as a cover. Two for one!

Blanket

Something that is weather appropriate. Lightweight during warmer weather, or a heavier one for the cold. Maybe even a swaddle.

Burp Rags

I like to take two of these.

Little bag of Mom’s stuff

Ex: phone, wallet, keys, lotion, floss, gum, chapstick, etc.

Water bottle

This adds extra weight, but is super important! Stay hydrated, Mama!

The items listed above are items I pack in a simple diaper bag that work for my baby and I. You can use it as a guideline, but at the end of the day, you will learn what your baby needs and you will know what’s best to have on the go!

This post was all about a minimalist diaper bag checklist.
